It all started in 2004, when my sixth grade Hebrew School teacher told us we had to watch the premiere of a new show called "Lost". Mrs. Klausner's son, Damon, was the co-creator, executive producer, and joint show runner of the new series. As first time watchers, none of us knew what we were in for. Despite its far fetched plot-line of an ever-present unknown nemesis, a monster made of smoke, and even a polar bear on the beach, my peers and I (along with pretty much the rest of the world) have been hooked!
We've come to know and love the characters on an intimate level, devotedly following them on their journey for six thrilling seasons. As each character's story develops, the audience is transported back in time, and shown tiny vignettes of their lives. The underlying theme that everyone's story intertwines and everyone is connected is clear in each and every episode. I can't even imagine what it must be like writing for this show. The fact that I even know Damon Lindelof's mom is exciting! His writing and ideas are celestial, and it is clear that he pays homage to his childhood learnings and heroes.
Us Lost fans are a special breed. We pay fastidious attention to every detail in the show's development, constantly look for clues, and above all, hypothesize like crazy. Weekly online symposiums to discuss recent plot twists or character deaths are our guilty pleasure, and only we understand how difficult it is to recoup after experiencing a new episode. Unfortunately, the series is coming to a close at the end of this season. After the last episode, you'll be sure to find a lugubrious version of myself. The show's end will be epic and depressing. We will finally get the answers we've been hoping for, and mourn the end of a T.V.-watching era. Nine days until the finale, but who's counting?!
