Have you prayed tonight, Desdemona?

Having been accused of transgressing the bonds of her marriage, Desdemona is asked this question on her death bed. The (in my opinion) most epic scene of Othello, exposes its audience to a fearful sight: a volatile Othello in a jealous rage.

Although Iago's pernicious and scheming influence on Othello is usually responsible for his irrational and envious behavior, Iago is not the only one at fault in this situation. I personally believe that Desdemona is also a large part of the ongoing deception. Her subtle and equitable demeanor, could really mask her true personality. Is it possible that some people feign innocence and truth in an expedient measure to avoid conflict? I think so.

Desdemona's behavior is incongruous with that of her fellow peers. She seems oddly angelic, and almost fake in a way. Its almost as if she's in denial. She may know of the duplicity that surrounds her, but makes no effort to change her circumstances. Despite her terrible fate, I believe that Desdemona's situation was not an impasse. She had the ability to change her destiny, and to take a stand for what she believed in. Unfortunately, she was not strong enough to take the initiative to change her future. Though I know I'll never be in a situation like hers, I hope that if I ever find myself in the middle of something unjust, I will be motivated and enthusiastic towards my goal of honesty.
