Awaiting the Oscars

It's finally that time of year again, and a general feeling of excitement is emanating throughout my entire house. The Oscars are almost here!! Our family tradition of watching the Oscars is one I look forward to every year. We subjugate our living room from all distraction, and create a "movie-watching haven" (with a huge amount of popcorn, obviously).

My mom and I begin the night by watching the red carpet, and judging the stars on their exorbitantly priced dresses and jewelry. Unfazed by the beautiful garments, my Dad and Sam sit this part out. They can't comprehend that the red carpet is half the fun of the entire show!

During the commercials, we discuss our individual predilections and guesses for best picture, best actress/actor, best supporting, etc. Once the show officially begins, my entire family watches with obsequious attention. Can you imagine what it would be like to actually attend an Oscar ceremony? How about being nominated for one of the categories?! The honor and prestige that comes with a nomination is tacit and renowned.

I know it sounds silly, but I've been known to secrete my fair share of tears (a.k.a. bawl hysterically) when an actress or actor I admire wins. Though it may sound odd that I have these catharsis-like reactions, I can't help it. Even though it is hard to explain, it's almost like the success of these people makes them human, and just like me. It gives me hope that I too can follow my dreams, and ultimately accomplish even my wildest goals. For example, when Evan Lysacek won the gold medal for men's figure skating in the Vancouver Olympics this past week, I couldn't contain my happiness. He set out to achieve a gold medal, and did just that. Lysacek gave it his all, and completely earned his success. It is an amazing feeling to witness triumph like this, and the real reason why I love the Oscars. Despite the clothes, the beauty, and the grandeur, this show rewards people for true excellence in their craft.
